April 2019

Our Next Meeting Is April 12, 2019

Program: Saltwater Hobby

Michael Haidet will be talking about how to get started, tank size, lighting, reef and fish only differences, maintenance, equipment, what corals are good to start with, and a couple DIY things that can save you money. He will also show pictures of his saltwater setup and talk about what he has learned over the years.

Biosketch: Michael Haidet has had fish tanks basically his whole life but started with saltwater about 8 years ago when his brother decided to try it. So they both bought a tank and tried setting it up as they would a freshwater system. They found out the hard way that back filters and power heads and regular lighting just don’t cut it. He has learned a lot and is still learning every day but the key to salt water is patience. Michael currently has a 125-gallon reef-ready tank. Michael has a mixed reef tank (several different coral species). His interest in the hobby now is getting an apex system set up on the tank and making sure everything stays happy in the tank. Hopefully by next year he will have a 300dd tank moved to the basement to adjust for fish and coral growth. Michael is excited to talk to everyone and answer any questions you might have in setting up your very own saltwater tank!
