Jeremy Basch lives in Columbus, Ohio, but he is originally from Westlake, Ohio, near Cleveland. He started keeping fish over 25 years ago when his father took him to a pet shop. At around 16 years of age, Jeremy started working at one of the largest fish stores in the Midwest and was hooked!
This continued until 2004 when he set up his first fish room. Currently, Jeremy is on his fourth modified fish room design, which now contains 100+ aquariums ranging in size from 2.5 to 150 gallons. Over the years, he has bred various species of fish including many cichlids, catfish, rainbows, killifish, livebearers, and invertebrates. He was also the first person in the world to have the Jaguar Catfish, Liosomadoras oncinus, spawn and give viable offspring! He also has been fortunate enough to have a few other world’s first spawns in his aquaria, including Centromochlus schultzi and Tatia gyrina.
Jeremy’s main focus is on the catfish of South America, including the families of Auchenipteridae—the Woodcats, Callichthyidae, and Loricariidae. He is a member and former Chairman of the Columbus Area Fish Enthusiasts in Columbus, Ohio. Other fish associations Jeremy belongs to include: the Ohio Cichlid Association, the Greater Cincinnati Aquarium Society, the American Killifish Association, and the American Cichlid Association. He has written a few articles that have appeared in the Buntbarsche Bulletin, his hometown club’s newsletter—the CAFE Menu, and Amazonas in which he shared his first successful breeding of Liosomadoras oncinus, the Jaguar Catfish.
The talk Jeremy will present to the Greater Akron Aquarium Society will share his trips to Colombia in 2018 and 2019. Both trips had spectacular views, interesting wildlife and various challenges. Join Jeremy as he shares his most recent travels to go and collect some of the rarest freshwater fish in Captivating Colombia!
