Sabu Yamamoto
This year’s speaker will be Sabu Yamamoto, and he will be presenting his talk, What the L? — An Introduction to Plecos.
Program Description: Many people get suckered (LoL) into buying a pleco to clean their tanks. They’re seen as entry level fish, yet they can be so much more! There are hundreds of varieties, each unique in their own way. The goal of this presentation is to give an overview on one of the most fascinating groups of fish.

Speaker Bio
Sabu is a hobbyist and business owner specializing in plecos, Corydoras, and peaceful community fish. As a child, he enjoyed catching crayfish and salamanders in the creek behind his home. His favorite pastime growing up was visiting the North Carolina zoo several times a year. This early exposure to wild animals led to a lifelong appreciation for nature and its creatures.
Sabu got his first fish tank in 2009, and like many beginner fish keepers, he bought some convict cichlids from PetSmart. They spawned immediately, and a newfound love of fish was born. After taking a break from fishkeeping, he discovered the wonderful world of plecos and dove back into fishkeeping with a new fervor.
Sabu joined his local fish club in Charlotte, NC, and that’s when things started getting really serious. Fish started breeding, and new species were just a meeting auction away. He discovered Corydoras, and a new addiction was fostered.
Sabu now organizes aquatic events, runs a retail business, Saburai Aquatics, (and on Facebook) and enjoys attending workshops and shows worldwide. He strives to connect with hobbyists and experts across the world in order to bring the newest innovations and information back home.
