Meet Charles Jermont:
Charles Jermont is a lifelong aquarium enthusiast who loves aquarium fish and enjoys helping others get into the aquarium hobby. Charles has been in the aquarium hobby for over 20 years, has owned a shop, and has been striving recently to become a successful discus breeder.
Charles started with goldfish from a school fair, and he and was hooked from that moment on. As a teen, he started trying to breed fish and learn more about the hobby. As he began digging into the hobby, his local fish store introduced him to Tropical Fish Magazine, and he grew in his knowledge of the hobby.
Charles later joined the military and was stationed in Georgia, where he and his wife Jennifer visited many local shops. While there, they fell in love with saltwater fish. After getting a tank setup in Georgia, he learned about both saltwater and freshwater setups and started keeping his dream fish—Discus. He was later deployed overseas in combat and was unable to keep up with the hobby during that time.
After returning home, and with his military service completed, Charles started getting back into the aquarium hobby with saltwater. Later, he fell so in love with saltwater fish that he opened up a store in Hartville, Ohio, and later moved to Barberton, Ohio. Having thousands of gallons of water and hundreds of species of fish, he later closed the shop to pursue other things.
Fast forward to today, both Charles and Jennifer maintain a fish room of over 50 tanks with both saltwater, freshwater, and things that like both. Jennifer has axolotls, turtles, and many kinds of freshwater species, while Charles has a focus on discus and discus breeding. Of all aquarium species, discus has always been Charles’ favorite, and he is working on both domestic and imported discus in his fish room.
Currently in the fish room there are three breeding pairs, five wilds, and 100 plus babies. His first successful breeding attempt was last year with a turquoise pair that only gave him a few babies, but he still has them today as part of the breeding groups. Last year, the fish room had a major outbreak that killed the breeders and most of the babies, but the learning didn’t stop. Charles has met successful breeders from all over, and he has made friends to help guide and build a vast amount of knowledge and experience regarding the discus species.
